PERU: PARACAS RESERVE RECOVERS TOURISM AFTER 2007 QUAKE

(ANDINA).- Over a year after a magnitude-7.9 earthquake struck the Ica and Lima regions of Peru, the Paracas National Reserve is recovering from devastation, and tourism is on the rise.
The damage caused by the strong earthquake forced local authorities to close the park's doors; but fortunately, this measure only lasted two months.
The 22 employees working at the national reserve intensified efforts to reopen this ecological attraction which has a great marine biodiversity.
The earthquake destroyed tourism infrastructure sites, checkpoints and the interpretation center. Restaurants in the Lagunilla beach and several fishing boats were also damaged after a major tidal wave triggered by August 15 earthquake.
Paracas National Reserve is located in the department of Ica, province of Pisco, district of Paracas and has a surface of 335000 hectares.
Paracas National Reserve is the only coastal marine reserve that includes a portion of the Pacific Ocean within its borders. It features unique flora and fauna species and is a haven to a variety of migratory bird species.
