Huancavelica
The city of Huancavelica is located 457 kms. esat of Lima, at an elevation of 3,660 meters above sea level and has a population of 37,000 inhabitants approximately.
Historically it was inhabited by the ChavÃn, Tiwanaku, Wari, Chanqa and Inca cultures, they came here to mine the mercury, which they considered sacred, some of their remains can be seen at Huaytará y Uchkus Inkañán.
Of its most recent past one can see fine examples as the Cathedral and its many colonial houses.
Among its festivities the most important are the Adoration of the Magi, Eastern and the famous dances like Tijeras (Scissors) and Negritos.
The train service between Lima and Huancavelica, is the highest train in the Americas, also known as Tren Macho.
Of its natural beauties one can mention the San Cristóbal hot springs, the Choclococha y Oroncocha lakes, magnificent and rich in trout. Also the route to Castrovirreyna is impressive for its scenery.
