The city of Ayacucho is the capital of the Ayacucho province, it is located 570 Kms. south of Lima and at an elevation of 2,761 meters above sea level; it has an approximated population of 100,000 inhabitants.

Ayacucho was the craddle of the Wari Civilization, considered by many as the first Andean Empire,many of its remains can be seen at Quinua and Vilcashuamán. It also has many colonila buildings, such as the churches in Huamanga (now Ayacucho) and Huanta.

In the Quinua Historical Sanctuary was where the battle of Ayacucho took place in the 19th century, this battle was key for Peru´s Independence from Spain.

Among its most important festivities are worth mentioning the Carnival and Eastern.

The Pampa Galeras National Reserve for the conservation of Vicuñas its the largest one of its kind in Peru.

Ayacucho is also well known for its handicrafts.
