The capital of Apurimac is the city of Abancay, it is located 912 Kms. southeast of Lima and at an elevation of 2,378 meters above sea level; it has a population of 74,000 inhabitants.

The Saywite archaeological complex, dedicated to the water, is the entryway to the citadel of Choquequirao. Apurimac is alos de craddle of the Chanqa civilization.

The National Sanctuary of Ampay has many natural wonders and it is also a place to do adventure sports, same as the famous Apurimac Canyon and River, as well as the Pachachaca where rafting and kayaking are practised.

Among is festivities one can mention the Abancay Carnival and the Apu Tinkay, this last one taken place in mid-November; and most famous of them all, the Yawar Fiesta or Blood Feast that celebrates the culture clash between the andean and european worlds, celebraytes every 28th of July.
